In Vietnam, the Kitchen Gods Festival is a unique traditional belief that takes place on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month (lunar calendar – lịch âm, a calendar based on the moon’s cycles). On this day, Vietnamese families hold a ceremony to see the Kitchen Gods off to Heaven, where they will report on the family’s behavior over the past year to the Jade Emperor.
The Kitchen Gods, known collectively as Tao Quan (Kitchen Gods – các vị thần cai quản bếp núc và gia đình), are believed to observe everything that happens inside a household. Unlike Western beliefs, Vietnamese people think that daily actions, especially within the family, directly influence future fortune. This belief reflects the importance of morality and harmony in Vietnamese culture.
According to folk legend (folk legend – truyền thuyết dân gian, stories passed down orally through generations), the Kitchen Gods originate from a tragic love story involving three people: Trong Cao, Thi Nhi, and Pham Lang. Their story represents conjugal loyalty (conjugal loyalty – sự chung thủy vợ chồng, faithfulness between husband and wife) and emotional sacrifice. Because of their deep sense of love and responsibility, the Jade Emperor appointed them as deities who protect the home.>> 🔥 Form đăng kí giải đề thi thật IELTS 4 kĩ năng kèm bài giải bộ đề 100 đề PART 2 IELTS SPEAKING quý đang thi (update hàng tuần) từ IELTS TUTOR
Each god has a specific role. Pham Lang became the God of the Kitchen, responsible for cooking and daily meals. Trong Cao became the God of the House, overseeing family affairs. Thi Nhi became the God of the Market, taking care of economic matters. Together, they symbolize balance in domestic life.
On the festival day, families prepare offerings such as fruit, sticky rice, and votive paper (votive paper – vàng mã, paper offerings burned for spiritual purposes). One of the most symbolic rituals is releasing a live carp into rivers or lakes. The carp is believed to serve as a divine vehicle (divine vehicle – phương tiện linh thiêng, a sacred means of transportation) that carries the Kitchen Gods to Heaven. This ritual also reflects respect for nature and the wish for good luck in the coming year.
In modern times, although lifestyles have changed, the Kitchen Gods Festival remains a meaningful tradition. It reminds people to reflect on their actions, maintain family harmony, and prepare spiritually for the Lunar New Year.
