1. Giới thiệu chung

IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:

  1. Hardly là trạng từ mang hàm ý phủ định, thường đi với các từ ‘any’ and ‘ever’, nhưng không đi với các từ phủ định khác  
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: We hardly ever do anything interesting
  2. Hardly + verb tuy nhiên đối với động từ khuyết thiếu thì hardly đứng sau 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
      •  I can hardly breathe.
      • You have hardly done any work.
  3. Đảo ngữ với hardly rất thông dụng 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: Hardly had she begun to speak when there was a shout from the back of the hall.
  4. Hardly không liên quan đến "hard"

2. Cách dùng

2.1. Mang nghĩa "hầu như không, gần như"

=used for saying that something is almost not true or almost does not happen at all / used for saying that something is very little more or less than something = only just; almost not

  • Dùng với  ‘ever’, ‘any’, ‘anyone’, or ‘anything’ 
  • can hardly do something
  • hardly...at all

  • He hardly spoke except to say hello. 
  • Alice was so busy she hardly noticed the days pass by. 
  • We could hardly afford to pay the rent. 
  • The countryside around Stowe has hardly changed at all.
  • There was hardly any wind, just a slight breeze.

  • You’ve hardly eaten anything. 
  • Hardly anyone believed the fugitives’ story. 
  • It hardly ever rains here in the summer.
  • The region’s wine industry is hardly more than 40 years old. 
  • London is hardly an hour by train.

2.2. Mang nghĩa "vừa mới...thì đã...."

=used for saying that something had only just happened when something else happened

  • hardly had...than/when

  • She had hardly arrived when she started talking about leaving again.
  • Hardly had the men started training than they were sent into battle.

2.3. Mang nghĩa "dùng để gợi ý rằng cái gì là khó có thể xảy ra, không chắc có thực hoặc vô lý"

=used when you think it is obvious that something is not true, not possible, not surprising etc = certainly not

  • you can hardly expect​/​blame etc (=it would not be reasonable to expect, blame etc)

  • This is hardly the time to start discussing finances. 
  • You can hardly expect Myra to welcome you back after the way you’ve treated her.
