I. Cách dùng chung
IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:
- Dùng "whom" với các chức năng như sau:
Đại từ quan hệ
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
Students for whom English is a second language should consider taking the course.
The book was written by his wife, Joan, whom he married in 1962.
I don’t know whom you’ve already met.
- Đại từ để hỏi
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
- Whom do you blame?
- The man with whom she lived.
- The man she lived with.
II. Trường hợp dùng "whom" thay "who"
IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:
- Khi đóng vai trò là chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ của động từ hoặc giới từ có thể dùng whom thay who trong cách nói FORMAL (who can be used as the subject or object of a verb or preposition)
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
- To whom did you speak? (ĐÚNG - FORMAL hơn)
- Who did you speak to? (ĐÚNG)
III. Cách dùng "whom"tiếng anh
1. Mang nghĩa"dùng làm bổ ngữ cho một động từ hoặc giới từ"
=used for introducing information that shows which person you are talking about, or for adding more information about a specific person

- This is the gentleman whom I mentioned a moment ago.
- Who is the woman in the black hat? (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Người đàn bà đội mũ đen là ai vậy?)
- Who are the men in the white coats? (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Những người đàn ông mặc áo choàng trắng là ai vậy?)
- There are over 6,000 students, many of whom come from overseas.
2. Mang nghĩa"ai; người nào"
=used for asking or stating which person is affected by an action or is involved in something
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
- To whom did you speak?
- Mr Smith, who has a lot of teaching experience, will join us in the spring (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Ông Smith, người có rất nhiều kinh nghiệm giảng dạy, sẽ đến với chúng ta vào mùa xuân)
- Whom will they choose to lead them?
- ‘They say that Marlowe was murdered.’ ‘By whom?’
- Tell me whom you admire most.
