I. Giới thiệu chung
IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:
- Without có thể đóng 2 chức năng ngữ pháp như sau:
- Dùng như giới từ (as a preposition)

- She walked past without saying anything.
- Dùng như trạng từ (as an adverb):

II. Cách dùng "without"
1. Dùng "without" như giới từ (preposition)
1.1. Mang nghĩa"vắng/thiếu ( ai/cái gì), không có ( ai/cái gì) đi theo"
=You use without to indicate that someone or something does not have or use the thing mentioned/If you do something without someone else, they are not in the same place as you are or are not involved in the same action as you.

- He said he couldn't live without her (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: anh ấy nói anh ấy không thể sống thiếu cô ta được)
- I feel very lonely without my dog (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: thiếu con chó tôi cảm thấy rất đơn độc)
- We can't reach a decision without our chairman (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: chúng tôi không thể quyết định khi vắng ông chủ tịch)
- She can't see to read without her glasses (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: không dùng kính bà ấy không thể nhìn mà đọc được)
- Could these men have walked out of the prison without anyone noticing?
- How did you open the bottle without a bottle-opener? (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: làm thế nào không có đồ khui mà anh vẫn mở cái chai được?)
- I don't like myself without a beard.
- She wore a brown shirt pressed without a wrinkle.
- ...a meal without barbecue sauce
- I told Franklin he would have to start dinner without me.
- How can I rebuild my life without you?
- We would never go anywhere without you.
1.2. Mang nghĩa"mà không (dùng với dạng 'ing' để nói là không)"
=If one thing happens without another thing, or if you do something without doing something else, the second thing does not happen or occur/If you do something without a particular feeling, you do not have that feeling when you do it.

- Janet Magnusson watched his approach without enthusiasm.
- 'Hello, Swanson,' he said without surprise.
2. Dùng "without" như trạng từ (adverb)
Mang nghĩa"không có hoặc không biểu hiện cái gì"
=used for saying what someone or something does not have

- do/manage/go without (=continue your life or work in spite of not having something)

- We'll have one room with a bathroom and one room without (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: chúng ta sẽ có một phòng có buồng tắm và một phòng không có)
- if there's no milk , we'll have to manage without (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: nếu không có sữa, chúng ta đành xoay sở theo kiểu không có sữa)
- I can’t afford new trainers, so I’ll have to do without.
