I. Giới thiệu chung

II. Quy tắc đặt dấu phẩy trạng ngữ (Adverbials)

- Quy tắc dấu phẩy đối với trạng ngữ (adverbials) sẽ phụ thuộc liệu trạng ngữ đó sẽ đứng ở đầu câu, giữa câu hay cuối câu
1. Đặt dấu phẩy sau "trạng ngữ đứng đầu câu"

- At 4 o'clock, I'll jump in the river.
- Under the water, you can see the swans' legs spinning like crazy.
- With utmost caution, he removed the lid.
- As I know the ground, I'll go first.
- Imbued with common sense, Mark is a great choice for the role.

- Red and yellow with pink elephants, her umbrella was easy to spot in the crowd.

- As soon as the cake is golden-brown, take it out of the oven.

- When I was young, I used to think that money was the most important thing in life. Now that I am old, I know it is.

2. Có thể BỎ (không dùng) dấu phẩy khi là trạng từ đứng đầu câu (chỉ có 1 từ)

- The day before yesterday, I caught another 10lb bass. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: cụm trạng từ "the day before yesterday" nhiều từ nên không bỏ được
- Yesterday I caught another 10lb bass. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: vì yesterday là trạng từ (chỉ có 1 từ) nên dấu phẩy có thể bỏ được)
3. KHÔNG DÙNG dấu phẩy cho trạng ngữ đặt ở cuối câu
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
- The new manager, David Bain, will visit at 4 o'clock.
- IELTS TUTOR lưu ý: tất nhiên nếu viết At 4 o'clock, the new manager, David Bain, will visit câu vẫn đúng nhưng quá nhiều dấu phẩy làm câu lộn xộn và khó đọc
- A band played in the park for 8 hours on Tuesday 4th July (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: "on Tuesday 4th July" là cụm trạng từ ở cuối câu nên không có dấu phẩy)
- On Tuesday 4th July, a band played in the park for 8 hours.
- There is no peace where there are too many soldiers.
- There is no justice where there are too many lawyers.
4. Đặt 2 dấu phẩy (đầu & cuối) đối với trạng ngữ đứng giữa câu
IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:
- Một cách dễ hiểu nếu trạng ngữ đứng giữa câu không có hai dấy phẩy dùng để ngăn cách thì sẽ lẫn vào với câu làm rất khó đọc

- I'm very proud of my gold pocket watch. My grandfather, on his deathbed, sold me this watch
- John feeds his dog, with pig's ears, twice a day
