Bên cạnh hướng dẫn thêm cách phân tích cũng như bài sửa kĩ càng của học sinh IELTS TUTOR đã đi thi ngày 22/8, IELTS TUTOR hướng dẫn kĩ về Cụm giới từ (preposition phrase) tiếng anh, đây là điểm ngữ pháp chắc chắn nếu nắm vững nhiều cụm giới từ sẽ giúp cải thiện khả năng viết câu cũng như cách diễn đạt và paraphrase trong IELTS WRITING & SPEAKING rất nhiều

I. Định nghĩa cụm giới từ

1. Cách thành lập cụm giới từ

IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:

Cụm giới từ là một nhóm từ bắt đầu bằng một giới từ ghép với đối tượng (object) của giới từTrong đó: đối tượng (object) có thể là một danh từ, đại từ, trạng từ, danh động từ hoặc một mệnh đề...

1.1. Giới từ + cụm danh từ

I gave the keys to the woman who works in your officeIELTS TUTOR giải thích: trong câu này, in your office là cụm giới từ (prep + noun) 

Cụm giới từ (preposition phrase) tiếng anh

1.2. Giới từ + đại từ

IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:

Apart from us, it was empty
Would you like to go out with me please? (em có thể đi ra ngoài với anh được không?)

1.3. Giới từ + trạng từ / cụm trạng từ

IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:

From there, it will take you about 2 hours to the park. (từ đó, bạn sẽ mất khoảng 2 tiếng để đi tới công viên).
Until quite recently, no one knew about his paintings. (cho đến gần đây, không ai biết gì về bức tranh của anh ấy).

1.4. Giới từ + ving

Some people left without payingIELTS TUTOR giải thích: trong câu này, without paying là cụm giới từ (prep + ving)
She’s decided on doing a drawing course. (cô ấy quyết định học 1 khóa học vẽ).

1.5. Giới từ + cụm giới từ

IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:

If you can wait until after my meeting with jack, we can talk then. (nếu anh có thể đợi cho đến sau cuộc họp của tôi với jack, chúng ta có thể nói chuyện sau đó).

1.6. Giới từ + câu hỏi wh

We were really surprised at what they said. (chúng tôi đã rất bất ngờ về những gì họ nói).

2. Cụm giới từ đứng ở đâu?

Cụm giới từ thường được xem là thành phần của câu
Cụm giới từ được dùng như tính từ (bổ nghĩa cho danh từ) và trạng từ (bổ nghĩa cho động từ, tính từ hoặc trạng từ khác) nên vị trí của cụm giới từ cũng sẽ phụ thuộc vào cụm giới từ đóng vai trò là gì

2.1. Cụm giới từ dùng như adj (bổ nghĩa danh từ)

My sister goes on a diet with low-carb. (Cụm giới từ with low carb đóng vai trò làm tính từ bổ nghĩa cho danh từ a diet)
The cat in the middle is the cutestIELTS TUTOR giải thích: in the middle đóng vai trò adj bổ nghĩa thêm cho noun (the cat) để làm rõ thêm con mèo ở giữa

2.2. Cụm giới từ dùng như adv

2.2.1. Bổ nghĩa cho adj 

IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:

Her face was pale with fright. (Cụm giới từ with fright đóng vai trò trạng từ bổ nghĩa cho tính từ pale)

2.2.2. Bổ nghĩa cho cả câu

IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:

In the afternoon, we have to go to the office. (Vào buổi chiều, chúng tôi phải đến văn phòng).

2.2.3. Bổ nghĩa cho động từ

IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:

She sings in the garden. (Cô ấy hát trong vườn).

2.2.4. Bổ nghĩa cho trạng từ khác

IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:

He drives carefully in his mother’s car. (Anh ta lái xe của mẹ mình một cách cẩn thận).

II. Cụm giới từ gồm giới từ + danh từ thường gặp

1. Cụm giới từ bắt đầu với in

in a (good/bad) mood: lúc cảm giác vui, buồnIELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: I'm not in a good mood today so leave me alone, please.
in a hurry: VộiIELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: I can't talk right now as I'm in a hurry.
in a mess: Hỗn độnIELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: The whole house is in a mess. We need to tidy it today.
in a way: Bằng cách nào đóIELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: Can money buy happiness? In a way, I think so.
in addition (to): Để làm gìIELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: In addition to feeling tired, I felt a bit sick.
in advance (of): trướcIELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: It's a busy restaurant, so we should book a table in advance.
in agreement with: Thỏa thuận với aiIELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: I'm in agreement with many of the views of my classmates.
in any case: Dù saoIELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: I don't want to go and in any case, I wasn't invited.
in brief: Tổng thểIELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: The interview was, in brief, a complete disaster.
in case (+ clause): Trong trường hợpIELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: Take an umbrella in case it rains.
In case of emergency, dial 911.

in charge of: có trách nhiệm, đứng đầuIELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: Our president is too incompetent to be in charge of the economy.

in comparison with: So sánh vớiIELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: The weather in Scotland is awful in comparison with Italy.
in conclusion: Tổng kếtIELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: In conclusion, I believe we should do more to help the poor.
in control (of): kiểm soátIELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: He's not in control of his emotions so he gets upset very easily.

2. Cụm giới từ bắt đầu với at

6. Cụm giới từ bắt đầu với For
