1. Offset là ngoại động từ

Offset mang nghĩa"bù lại, đền bù, bù đắp, bù lỗ, khấu trừ (thuế)"
(to balance one influence against an opposing influence, so that there is no great difference as a result)

- The extra cost of travelling to work is offset by the lower price of houses here.
- The decline in profits was not offset by increased productivity. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Lợi nhuận xuống thấp không được đền bù bằng tăng sản lượng)
- The carriers said they needed to lift rates to offset higher costs. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Người chuyên chở nói rằng họ cần nâng mức giá để bù đắp chi phí cao hơn)
- Falling sales in Vietnam were offset by strong performances in other markets. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Buôn bán thất thu ở Việt Nam được bù lỗ nhờ buôn bán sôi nổi ở những thị trường khác)
- The price of petrol products was offset by a decline in motor vehicle prices.
3. Cụm hay dùng
offset against tax

- He keeps his petrol receipts because petrol is one of the expenses that he can offset against tax (= can show to the government as being a business cost, and so not pay tax).
