I. Giới thiệu chung
1. Tổng quan

- Khi đi với động từ ở phủ định sẽ dùng OR (không dùng AND) (We use or after the negative form of a verb, instead of and)

- Which do you prefer? Leather or suede?
- You can have some freshly baked scones or some chocolate cake or both.
- The child never smiles or laughs.
2. Chia động từ với "OR"
IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:
Khi chủ ngữ được nối bởi liên từ “OR” hoặc “NOR” thì chia động từ theo chủ ngữ gần nhất với động từ
S1 OR/NOR S2 + V(s2)

- Our happiness or our sorrow is largely due to our actions.
- My parents or my brother is staying at home now.
- You or I am the winner.
A banjo or a mandolin is what we need. (singular nouns)
I think more pictures or ornaments are needed in this room. (plural nouns)
3. Cách dùng "either or"

II. Cách dùng từ "OR"
1. Mang nghĩa"hoặc, hay là"
=You use or to link two or more alternatives/You use or to give another alternative, when the first alternative is introduced by 'either' or 'whether'

- whether... or
- or not

- 'Tea or coffee?' John asked.
- ‘When will you get the results?’ ‘Either tomorrow or the day after.’
- You don’t care whether he lives or dies, do you?
- The jury must decide whether the prisoner is guilty or not.
- is it yellow or red ? (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: cái đó màu vàng hay màu đỏ?)
- is it right or wrong ? (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: cái đó đúng hay sai?)
- Spread the inside of the loaf with olive paste or pesto sauce for extra flavour.
- He said he would try to write or call as soon as he reached the Canary Islands.
- Students are asked to take another course in English, or science, or mathematics.
- Items like bread, milk and meat were either unavailable or obtained only on the black market.
- Either you can talk to him, or I will.
- I don't know whether people will buy it or not.
- I am not sure whether I was knocked over by the blast or whether I just fell.
- The bathroom has taken a lot longer to get right than either Elaine or Dennis had envisaged.
- The man was a fool, he thought, or at least incompetent.
- There was nothing more he wanted, or so he thought.
- That was sporting of him. Or should I say cowardly.
- She was aware of tension between them. Or had it been there from the beginning?
2. Mang nghĩa"nếu không thì"
=If you say that someone should do something or something unpleasant will happen, you are warning them that if they do not do it, the unpleasant thing will happen/used for saying what will happen if someone does not do something

- She had to have the operation, or she would die.
- The soldiers told everyone to leave or they would be shot.
- We must deal with the problem now, or else it will be too late.
- Turn the heat down or your cake will burn (IELTS TUTOR giải thích:Hạ nhiệt độ xuống kẻo bánh cháy đấy)
- You’d better do what I say, or else (=I will do something bad to you).
3. Mang nghĩa"cũng không"(sau một câu phủ định)
=used for including someone or something else in a negative statement

- She’s had nothing to eat or drink all day.
- I never had any help or advice from my parents.
- he can't read or write (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: nó không biết đọc cũng không biết viết)
- they never dance or sing (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: họ chẳng bao giờ nhảy cũng chẳng bao giờ hát)
4. Mang nghĩa"tức là; nghĩa là"
=used for introducing a comment that corrects or adds more information to what you have just said

- There are six cashpoints, or ATMs, in the main airport terminal.
- a dug-out or a hollowed-tree boat (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: một chiếc thuyền độc mộc, tức là một chiếc thuyền bằng một thân cây đục thành)
- a kilo , or two pounds (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: một ký lô tức là hai pao)
- This is a problem for the government, or rather for the Prime Minister, to deal with.
=used when you are trying to show that something must be true, by saying that the situation would be different if it was not true

- He obviously doesn’t have a plan, or he would have said something.

- It must be something serious, or else they wouldn’t have radioed for help.
6. Mang nghĩa"hoặc là, khoảng chừng"
=You use or between two numbers to indicate that you are giving an approximate amount/used between two similar numbers for showing that you do not know what the exact number is

- The car has to be serviced every five or six thousand miles.
