II. Cách dùng
1. Dùng would để nói về hành động quá khứ chưa xảy ra tại thời điểm chúng ta nói đến
=used for talking about something that was going to happen after a particular point in the past / used for showing what someone expected, intended, promised etc when they were thinking or talking about the future

- Here she met the man who would one day become her husband.
- James said he would never forgive her.
- Most analysts expected that there would be a change in policy.
- ‘Our plan isn’t going to work.’ ‘I never thought it would.’
- In Berlin, he first met the woman whom he would one day marry. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Ở Béc-lin, ông ấy đã gặp người phụ nữ mà sau này ông ấy sẽ cưới làm vợ.)
- There was a chance that my letter would arrive in time.(IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Có khả năng lá thư của tôi sẽ đến kịp.)
2. Mang nghĩa "mong muốn trong quá khứ nhưng đã không xảy ra"
=used for talking about the possible results of a situation that is unlikely to happen or that did not happen

3. Dùng để hỏi ý kiến ai đó về một điều gì đó.
=used for politely asking someone to do something or to let you do something / used when making a polite offer or invitation

- Would được dùng trong những lời đề nghị và yêu cầu lịch sự, như hình thức nhẹ hơn của will.

- If you would come this way ... (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Mời anh đi đường này...)

- Would you like tea, or would you prefer coffee? (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Anh thích trà hay cà phê?)
- Would someone please help me move the piano?
- Would you mind waiting outside?
- Would it be all right if I used your phone?
- Would you like a cup of coffee or something?
- Would anyone care for a game of tennis?
4. Mang nghĩa "diễn tả thói quen trong quá khứ"
=used for saying what someone used to do in the past

- Chúng ta dùng would như một hình thức quá khứ của will để nói về những thói quen và tính cách điển hình trong quá khứ.

- The Campbells would sometimes invite us over for the weekend.
- On winter evenings we’d all sit around the fire.
- When she was old, she would sit in the corner talking to herself for hours. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Khi bà ấy già, bà ấy hay ngồi trong góc nói chuyện lẩm bẩm một mình hàng giờ liền.)
- Sometimes he would bring me little presents without saying why.(IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Đôi khi anh ấy mang cho tôi những món quà nhỏ mà không nói lý do tại sao.)

5. Trong câu gián tiếp, would được dùng sau động từ tường thuật chia ở quá khứ tại khi mà trong câu trực tiếp sử dụng will.

- Trong câu gián tiếp, would được dùng sau động từ tường thuật chia ở quá khứ tại khi mà trong câu trực tiếp sử dụng will.
- Khi Would được dùng trong câu trực tiếp thì trong câu gián tiếp ta vẫn dùng would.

- Câu trực tiếp: Tomorrow will be fine. (Ngày mai trời sẽ đẹp.)
- Câu gián tiếp: The forecast said the next day would be fine. (Dự báo nói rằng ngày hôm sau trời sẽ đẹp.)
- Câu trực tiếp: Would you like some help? (Anh có cần giúp không?)
- Câu gián tiếp: She asked if I would like some help. (Cô ấy hỏi tôi có cần giúp không?)
6. Diễn tả sự mong muốn
=used for politely saying what someone wants to do or wishes

- would like/love/prefer etc to do something

- I think David would like to see you alone. ‘
- Come and spend Christmas with us.’ ‘I’d love to, but I can’t.’
