1. Cách dùng THOUSAND / MILLION - Hundred/Hundreds of và Thousand/Thousands of


1. Khi để nói con số chính xác định lượng được, chúng ta viết:

  • How much? – Three thousand. (Không viết: three thousands) 
  • Last year, there were approximately four thousand foreigners visiting Vietnam. (Không viết: Last year, there were approximately four thousands foreigners visiting Vietnam).
  • They had driven over a/one thousand miles. 
  • The population of the village is about three thousand.
  • I have a thousand things to do before we go away.

  • Your essay should be no more than two thousand words long.

  • Twelve thousand years ago, our ancestors were primitive savages living in caves.

  • A thousand people took part in the region's biggest-ever cycle race.

  • Our computer indexes several thousand new records every second.

  • A thousand people came to the game.

  • A thousand-dollar ring

  • They paid three hundred thousand for the house. 
  • Thirty thousand dollars a year doesn't really go very far in the modern world. 
  • Two thousand workers are being made redundant.

THOUSANDS nếu mà đứng một mình thù thường có s, ngoại trừ four thousand, five thousand...

2. Chỉ khi chúng ta nói ý ‘rất nhiều người’, hoặc ‘hàng nghìn người’, chúng ta viết:

  • Thousands of people have visited Vietnam last year. There were thousands/millions of people there.
  • The damage will cost thousands of dollars to repair.
  • His latest work is expected to sell in the thousands.
  • Accommodation needs to be found for thousands of homeless families.
  • Thousands of jobs rely on this industry. 
  • They spent thousands of dollars trying to fix the problem.


2.1. INSTEAD là adverb - Trạng từ - Thay vì

Thông thường INSTEAD dùng như ADVERB sẽ đứng ở cuối câu một mình (KHÔNG CÓ NOUN Ở PHÍA SAU!)

  • I'm going to drop yoga and do aerobics instead
  • How on earth could they knock down a lovely old building like that and put a car park there instead?
  • If we don’t go to Europe this summer, where would you like to go instead (= what other place would you like to go)?
  • There's no coffee - would you like a cup of tea instead?

2.2. INSTEAD OF là preposition - Giới từ - Thay thế cho ai / cái gì (Thay vì)


  • You can go instead of me, if you want.
  • Instead of complaining, why don't we try to change things?
  • I wish you'd spend more time at home instead of going out drinking with your friends every night. 
  • You can make shortbread with margarine instead of butter, but it isn't the same. 
  • You waste a lot of water by having a bath instead of a shower.


3.1. EMISSION: sự phát ra (ánh sáng, nhiệt...); sự bốc ra/toả ra (mùi vị, hơi...) --> Danh từ không đếm được

  • Environmental groups want a substantial reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases.
  • Hybrid vehicles reduce the emission of pollutants by about 20%.

3.2. EMISSIONS: các vật phát ra hoặc bốc ra --> Danh từ đếm được

NẾU MÀ MANG NGHĨA "KHÍ'' (Carbon...) thì sẽ số nhiều nhé

  • carbon dioxide emissions
  • The policy goal is to reduce the 2010 total carbon emission to 90 per cent that of 2000.
  • With a personalised carbon dioxide emission allowance it is apparent that the third world would benefit at the expense of the developed world.

4. Cách dùng từ JOIN

4.1. JOIN + Object (Tân Ngữ) + For / In sth/ Doing sth

JOIN lúc này mang nghĩa gia nhập vào một tổ chức để trở thành một thành viên

JOIN dùng với nghĩa này thường đi với tân ngữ, hoặc là không kèm tân ngữ vẫn được

  • My football club is looking for an established and enthusiastic individual for new season. I think you should join because of your talent. (Câu lạc bộ bóng đá của tôi đang tìm kiếm một cá nhân nhiệt huyết và tài năng cho mùa giải mới. Tôi nghĩ với tài năng của mình, bạn nên gia nhập).
  • I don't have time for a drink now, but I'll join you later. 
  • Why don't you ask your sister if she would like to join us for supper? 
  • We took the ferry across the Channel and then joined (= got on) the Paris train at Calais. 
  • If you're buying tickets, please join the queue (= stand at the end of it). 
  • I'm sure everyone will join me in wishing you a very happy retirement (= everyone else will do this too). 

4.2. JOIN + IN + Object (Tân Ngữ) = get involved in = liên quan, liên ngụy đến cái gì [Phrsal verb]

join in là tham gia vào một hoạt động đang xảy ra

Join in có thể đứng một mình hoặc kèm với tân ngữ đều ok

  • Everyone can join in when I sing the National Anthem.
  • Last morning, when a parade was occurring on the Main street, I called for him to join in it. (Sáng qua khi một buổi diễu hành diễn ra trên đường Main, tôi đã rủ anh ấy tham gia vào).

5. Cách dùng Face / Be Faced with / Face up to

5.1. Cách dùng FACE = Đối mặt với

Face dùng như ngoại động từ nên lúc nào cũng phải có tân ngữ phía sau

  • This is one of the many problems faced by working mothers.
  • Passengers could face long delays.
  • I think Phil has to face the fact that she no longer loves him.
  • We have to face facts here - we simply don't have enough money.
  • He's dying but he refuses to face the truth.
  • She half hoped he would not find her, though she knew she would have to face him sooner or later.

5.2. Be Faced with + noun = Đối mặt với

  • You're faced with a very difficult choice there.

5.3. Face up to + noun --> Phrsal Verb: thừa nhận, đương đầu khó khăn ( to accept and deal with something that is difficult or unpleasant)

  • She's going to have to face up to the fact that he's not going to marry her.
  • He had to face up to the fact that she would never walk again.
  • You have to face up to your responsibilities.
